Body Mapping is a creative therapeutic tool that brings together bodily experience and visual artistic expression. It involves drawing one’s body outline onto a large surface and using colours, pictures, symbols and words to represent experiences lived through the body. It began in 1999 when clinical psychologist and narrative therapist Jonathan Morgan, then director of ‘Memory Box Project’ at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, integrated Body Mapping into his group work with adults living with HIV/AIDS. In 2005 Xavier Verhoest, artist and former Médecins sans Frontières volunteer, discovered Body Mapping in South Africa through an exhibition of Body Maps. He started to share this method with people living with HIV/AIDS in Kenya. The Art2Be programme offers Art and Creative Therapy Services to local and international organisations.
Location: Kenya, East Africa and Cape Town, Western Province
