AMAZWI ABESIFAZANE (VOICES OF WOMEN)

Voices of Women is a project of Create South Africa Trust was originated by Andries Botha, Fine Art lecturer at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).

Since 1999 it has asked women to remember and creatively express their experiences as “A day I will never forget”.  The women write their stories and then render them as embroidered and beaded cloths.  A photograph of each woman is taken and all their details and visuals of the cloths, as well as indigenous and translated versions of the stories, are archived.  These currently number approximately 3000 and have become a parallel alternative historical narrative. This large collection, as a centralized archive, continues to provide insight into the emotional, cultural and political lives of communities, and in particular women, throughout South Africa.

The collection has evolved from the belief that social and cultural invisibility is combated by creating a forum for values and perspectives to be articulated, expressed and made integral to the historical narrative.

Location: Phansi Museum, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal
