Umcebo is a business orientated non-profit organization, focused on being a trend setter and market leader in the fields of South African art, craft and design. Headed up by Robin Opperman, they employ the use of creativity as a commercially viable means of empowering marginalized community members, in an inclusive and healthy environment. In this way, Umcebo creates opportunities where few existed before, overcomes multiple social barriers and aims to generate sustainable income for 45 crafters as well as their extended families. Umcebo received a National Teaching Award in 2000 and has exhibited at three Design Indaba’s (2008/9/10). Their clients include Oprah Winfrey, Rita Marley, Richard Branson and the Anthropologie store chain in the USA and the UK. Their chandeliers are stocked by Weyland’s in South Africa, and their work can be found in local and international corporate and private collections.
